Palakkad is a neat little City in South Malabar, Kerala, with Eighteen Villages (Agraharams) in the City and Kalpathy is the one, with Six Satellite Villages.
The presiding deity of this Village is Lord Viswanathaswamy (Siva). Every Year Kalpathy Chariot Festival is conducted during the month of October-November.
Kalpathy Car Festival is the most popular and time honored festival of Malabar. It is celebrated simultaneously at the Sree Viswanathaswamy Temple and its satellite temples at Old Kalpathy, Chathapuram and New Kalpathy. All the above villages are on the banks of the Nila River, popularly known as Kalpathy Puzha.
The real Chariot Festivals of the Nine day programme is on the 7th, 8th & 9th day. On the 9th day, that is the last day of the Festivals there will be a congregation of Five Chariots at New Kalpathy in the evening, a diving scene to be seen and enjoyed.
The Chariots are drawn by the people only without any discrimination of caste or creed. This practice is there from the time immemorial and is the unique feature of this festival.
